two fundraisers for scholarships:

Alumni Golf Scramble Aug. 14;
Night at the Races Aug. 8

UPPER BURRELL, Pa. -- Penn State New Kensington students will be the beneficiaries of two summer fundraisers by the Alle-Kiski Society -- Alumni Golf Scramble set for 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 14, at the Links at Spring Church in Apollo; and a Night at the Races slated for 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 8, at the Elks Lodge #644 in Tarentum.

Proceeds from both events benefit the Alle-Kiski Society Endowed Scholarship, which funds yearly awards to campus undergraduates. This year, a record $5,500 will be awarded to campus students. In the past 23 years, the New Kensington-based society has awarded $48,000 to 55 campus students. The scholarship, first endowed in 1998 at $15,000, now stands at $109,000.

Golf
The green fee is $110 and includes golf and cart, lunch, dinner, prizes and refreshments on the course. Participants can form their own foursome or a group can be formed for them. Various golf packages are available, including foursomes, tee sponsorships and dinner-only. Faculty, staff, alumni and friends are encouraged to take a few divots to raise dollars for the society's scholarship fund. There are a variety of sponsorship levels. Businesses and individuals are encouraged to invest in campus students by taking advantage of sponsorship opportunities that range from exclusive sponsor of the tournament for $3,000 to a tee sponsor for $100. There are five levels, and each level has different perks. The levels include: "The Pride," tournament sponsor for $3,000; "For the Future," dinner and awards sponsor for $1,500; "The Nittany," lunch sponsor for $500; "Roaring Lion," beverage cart sponsor for $500; and "Blue/White," tee sponsor for $100. Horses
Enthusiasts of the Sport of Kings are encouraged to purchase ownership of a horse in one of the races, and experience the exhilaration of winning a big race. Horses are $5, $10, and $20, and winning owners get $25 for a $5 horse, $50 for a $10 horse and $125 for a $20 horse. Don’t fret if you can’t join the exclusive owners club. The horseless hoi polo can still turn a profit by cashing in on the parimutuel results. Admission to the event is free, so even if you don’t own the victor of the Tarentum Derby, you can still come home with a pocket full of tin by putting a few shekels on the nose of the bobtail nag while somebody else bets the bay. Horses are available from Michael Sawhook, 724-335-3583.
