Disney’s “Zootopia” and “Jungle Book”
under the stars and free to the community
NEW KENSINGTON, Pa -- Penn State New Kensington will host two evening movies outdoors in July and August. In keeping with Chancellor Kevin Snider’s vision of bringing together the campus and community, the shows are free to the public and geared to families.
“Summer BBQ and Drive-in Movie” will be held on Wednesday nights in the campus’ Athletics Center parking lot. The BBQ begins at 7 p.m., and the Disney flicks start at dusk. Both are rated PG.
The series kicks off on July 13, with “Zootopia,” an animated film featuring a city where anthropomorphism runs rampant. The buddy cop movie features a rookie female rabbit whose partner is a grizzled veteran male wolf. They are out to solve a mysterious missing animals case. Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman and Idris Elba, who won a BET “Best Actor” award for the movie, are the voices of the lead mammals.
“The Jungle Book” debuts under the stars on August 10. With a threat from the tiger, Shere Kahn, hanging over him, Mowgali, a man-cub, flees the jungle. With the help of his newfound-friend Baloo, Mowgali searches for his true identity. Of course, a litany of jungle denizens of dubious nature try to interrupt the search. Bill Murray, Ben Kinsley, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken and the aforementioned Elba provide voices of the good and bad guys.
The BBQ is $5. Campus students enrolled in summer or fall 2016 classes are entitled to a free BBQ.
If the capricious western Pennsylvania weather does not cooperate, the family-oriented movies will relocate inside the Athletics Center where they will still be shown on a big screen.
