For want of a Christmas Tree, the cup was lost.
The Chancellor's Cup, emblematic of bowling supremacy at Penn State New Kensington, was up for grabs March 20 at the Alle-Kiksi Society's ninth annual alumni Bowl-a-thon. The upset-minded Daily Juicers, led by Bill Christie's 622 set, were on the verge of knocking off two-time defending champions Old Timers.
After two games, the Juicers led by 34 pins. When the final pin fall was tallied, only three pins, 2008-2005, separated the two squads. But like the 300 Spartans against Persian King Xerxes at the Battle of Thermopylae, the Juicers could not hold off the Old Timers' conquest of a fifth cup. By missing a Christmas Tree spare, the 3-7-10 pins, the Juicers were denied the opportunity to topple the Old Timers dynasty.
Despite the cry to 'break up the Yankees,' the cup remains with Chet Howell, Carol Perroz, Jim Talliario, Bubba Hileman, and Tim Perroz for another year. The names of the members of the winning team are inscribed on the cup that is displayed in the trophy case in the lobby of the Conference Center. Hileman is the Pittsburgh Steelers of the bowl-a-thon. He has the distinction of owning a six-pack of cups. He was a member of the Half Keglers that won the inaugural trophy in 2003.
Aside from the campus skirmish, the bowl-a-thon brought together more than 130 Penn State alumni, friends, students, faculty and staff who formed 36 teams and filled all the lanes of Wildlife Lanes in Lower Burrell. The high game was a 238 that was turned in by Dewey Traini and the high set belonged to Christie.
The bowl-a-thon is the Alle-Kiski society's spring fundraiser, and all proceeds will benefit the athletics and recreational facilities at the New Kensington campus. The society, based at the campus, has pledged $10,000 to the campus Athletic Department during the current University-wide fundraising effort, For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students. The alumni group made an initial installment of $4,000 in December to convert space on the lower level of the Athletics Center into a weight room for free weights and heavy equipment.
The society's next major fundraiser is the alumni golf scramble that is set for Friday, Aug. 12, at the Links at Spring Church. Proceeds help fulfill the society's other pledge, a $25,000 commitment over the next four years to increase the principal of the "Alle-Kiski Society Endowed Scholarship" from its current total of $51,000 to $76,000. Each year, dividends from the endowment are used for scholarships for campus students. For the 2010-11 academic year, the society awarded $4,000 in scholarships to three New Kensington students, Melissa Gemballa, Jaclyn Burkett and Erika Watson. Since 1998, the Alle-Kiski Society has awarded $30,000 to 38 students.
