Penn State New Kensington’s fall sports schedule is in full swing as women’s volleyball, men’s soccer and men’s and women’s golf are on the road this week.
The volleyball team concludes its non-conference schedule at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 13, at Carlow College in Pittsburgh. The New Kensington Lady Lions opened the season Aug. 31 with the United State Collegiate Athletic Conference (USCAA) Tip-off Classic at Penn State Greater Allegheny. Coach Dave McCleary’s squad sandwiched a 2-0 victory over Southern State (Ohio) College between losses to Greater Allegheny, Rochester (Michigan) College, University of Cincinnati-Cleremont and Marygrove (Michigan) College. The last three defeats were to teams ranked in the top 10 nationally in the USCAA.
First-year coach Pat Cavanaugh’s soccer team opened its season at home Sept. 8 with a 6-0 conference victory over Penn State Mont Alto. Junior striker Ashutosh Pandey led the attack with three goals, the first “hat trick” in the New Kensington Lions three-year history. Sophomore midfielders Michael Clear, Brandon Smail, and Cordel Delzer scored one goal each. Freshman goalie Jimmy Cook recorded a shutout in his first collegiate game. He was called upon to make one save as the defense, anchored by junior defender Adam Bombalski, stymied the Mont Alto attack. Soccer continues its six-game road trip when it travels east for a conference game at 1 p.m,. Saturday, Sept. 15 against Penn State Worthington Scranton.
Due to renovations to the campus soccer field, this year’s home games are played at Valley High School in New Kensington. The next home stand features a non-conference match at 4 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 27, versus Mount Aloysius, and a PSUAC conference game 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 29, against Penn State Brandywine.
The golf team hits the road for the Wilkes-Barre Invitational at 11 a.m,. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Irem Temple Golf Course in Dallas, Pa. Heavy rain on Sept. 4 caused the postponement of the team’s first tournament at Brookside Country Club in Allentown.
