The fourth annual Fall Festival at Penn State New Kensington, set for Saturday, Sept. 29, will feature a variety of activities, including musical entertainment throughout the day, for people of all ages. The festival is a community-wide event geared toward local residents as well as campus students and alumni. Activities will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with events taking place across the campus' 72 acres. The festival includes food vendors, crafts, kids’ zone, bed races, motorcycle run, and TV football game. All events, except the motorcycle run, are free to the public.
Highlighting the day will be the outdoor concert series from 12:30 to 7 p.m., with rock and roll band Gene the Werewolf, 5:30 p.m., and country rock fiddler Chris Higbee, 3:30 p.m., as the featured performers. The four-band line-up opens with an acoustic group, 3 Dudes Chillin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the classic rock band Dimwit at 2 p.m. For more information, contact Lauren Blum at 724-334-6063 or ldb14@psu.edu via email.
The festival opens at 10 a.m. with the first “Motorcycle Run to Benefit Active Duty Soldiers.” The three-hour, 100-mile ride from the campus to Indiana Borough and back includes a stop at Indiana Memorial Park. Upon the return to the New Kensington campus, a complimentary pig roast awaits participants. The cost is $10 for a solo rider and $15 for a rider and passenger. Registration begins at 9 a.m. in the upper parking lot of the campus. Preregistration is encouraged but not required. To preregister, contact Danielle DeStefano at 724-334-6019 or dnd125@pasu.edu via email. Payment is due the day of the run.
Fourteen craft booths and five food vendors will outline the perimeter of the parking lot beginning at 11 a.m. Crafters will include purveyors of jewelry, silk flowers, wood products and more. The food booths will feature peanuts and cotton candy, a nacho bar, belgium waffles, ice cream, and beef brisket and pulled pork sandwiches. For more information, contact Sharon Levett at 724-334-6012 or sql1@psu.edu.
Children can keep busy at the Kids' Zone from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Athletics Center. Activities will include giant inflatables, craft station, balloon artists, face painting and a pumpkin patch. The special attraction is Grant L.Kemmer III’s Wild World of Animals, a wildlife show for all ages. For more information, contact Lauren Blum at 724-334-6063 or ldb14@psu.edu via email.
The preliminary rounds of the now-legendary Bed Races, believed to be the first of its kind at a Penn State campus begin at noon in the parking lot of the Athletics Center. The competition features five-person teams (four pushers, one rider) who navigate a rolling bed over a measured course while performing tasks at various stations along the way. A series of timed heats culminates with the championship run at 3 p.m. In addition, judges will award prizes in various categories including wackiest design and best theme. Alumni, community and student groups are encouraged to enter a team. Beds will be provided. Registration is $25 per team and proceeds benefit THON. Other Penn State campuses, local high schools, and regional higher education institutions are welcome to compete. Deadline for registration is Sept. 22. For more information, contact Lauren Blum at 724-334-6063 or ldb14@psu.edu via email.
Nittany Lions fans can quench their football thirst in the “Alumni Central” tent from noon to 6:30 p.m. as Penn State faces Illinois in the Big Ten opener for both squads. A special section of the tent is set aside for a big screen TV, and alumni and friends can root on the Lions against Illinois that kicks off at noon. Tailgate refreshments and food will be available. Penn State supporters are asked to bring canned food and nonperishable items to the tent for distribution to the Allegheny Valley Association of Churches Food Bank. For more "Alumni Central" activities, contact Bill Woodard at 724-334-6046 or uxw1@psu.edu.
