Penn State New Kensington's first-year students as well as upperclassmen have opportunities to explore the educational and cultural activities in Pittsburgh.
STUDENTS FROM WESTERN CAMPUSES TO EXPERIENCE
CULTURAL AND ENTERTAINMENT EVENTS IN THE CITY
A new Penn State initiative provides opportunities for students from four campuses in Western Pennsylvania to experience the best of what the city of Pittsburgh has to offer.
The program brings together students from the campuses of Beaver, Fayette, Greater Allegheny and New Kensington for a series of events highlighting the city’s educational, cultural, athletic and shopping benefits. Five events are scheduled throughout the fall and spring semesters and most will be held on the weekend.
During the next seven months, Penn State New Kensington students can head to a Pirates game, visit the Andy Warhol Museum, skate at the Rink at PPG Place, take in the Broadway play “Wicked” at the Benedum Center, and shop downtown at Christmas and in the Strip District in the spring. There is free transportation from the campus.
The cultural/entertainment series is a part of the “Penn State in Pittsburgh” recruitment initiative that extolls the benefits of attending one of the Penn State campuses in the Pittsburgh region. With nine bachelor’s degree programs and new scholarship money available, the New Kensington campus is a good fit for prospective students wanting to major in administration of justice, psychology, business, communications, electro-mechanical engineering technology, information sciences and technology, nursing and organizational leadership. High school students and adult learners who want concentrated instruction to prepare for specialized occupational assignments can enroll in a two-year associate degree program in biomedical engineering technology, business administration, information sciences and technology and radiological sciences. The letters, arts, and sciences associate program provides graduates with a general education and some specialization in their fields of interest.
In addition to the 14 degrees that can be completed at the New Kensington campus, students can begin their first two years of studies in more than 160 Penn State degree programs at the New Kensington campus and finish their work at the University Park campus or another campus. Known as the Penn State 2+2, the program is the most common path to a Penn State degree for approximately 60 percent of students. Undergraduates choose this option for a variety of reasons, including staying closer to home, saving money on tuition and housing, and feeling more comfortable with smaller class sizes, as well as taking advantage of the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate athletics.
