Penn State New Kensington, in cooperation with the Pittsburgh Foundation, is participating in a regional philanthropy initiative that begins at midnight Thursday, Oct. 3.
The fifth annual “Pittsburgh Gives Day of Giving 2013” is a 24-hour period during which online donations to the campus from Allegheny and Westmoreland county residents are partially matched by the Pittsburgh Foundation. Only credit card donations made through the pittsburghgives.org website are eligible to be matched. This is the second year that the New Kensington campus has participated in the program.
“The day of giving is a great and easy way to support Penn State New Kensington students,” said Donna Speer, director of development at the campus. “Donations can be made from the convenience of offices or homes, and a portion of the gift receives a match.”
Pittsburghgives.org is the website that was launched in 2009 by the foundation to serve as a vehicle for online donations. Non-profit organizations in the community use the website to showcase their charitable missions and to increase the level of knowledge about nonprofits in our region.
Alumni and friends are encouraged to support the campus through pittsburghgives.org so that the donations can be leveraged through the Pittsburgh Foundation. Gifts to the campus benefit the Future Fund at the campus. The Future Fund holds unrestricted gifts that are essential to the continued success of the campus. Chancellor Kevin Snider depends on these flexible resources to address the New Kensington campus’ most pressing needs and to create opportunities. These funds are applied to areas with the greatest need, like student aid and academic initiatives.
The minimum matching gift is $25 and the maximum is $10,000. The matching program ends at 11:59 p.m. on Oct. 3. All donations are 100 percent tax deductible and count towards the University-wide, $2 billion fundraising effort, "For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students."
“This new opportunity to give is especially important during a period when other funding sources have diminished or disappeared altogether,” said Speer, who oversees the campus’ $3 million campaign goal. “We hope our supporters will take advantage of this new initiative.”
Established in 1945, the Pittsburgh Foundation is one of the nation’s oldest community foundations and is the 14th largest of more than 700 community foundations across the United States. Its resources comprise endowment funds established by individuals, businesses and organizations.
