COMPUTER PROGRAMS, PHOTOGRAPHY, ORGANIZATION AND ART.
Numerous noncredit lifelong learning courses are offered throughout the fall semester by the Office of Continuing Education at Penn State New Kensington. The courses do not carry college credit and are designed to meet the needs of specific skill development.
The courses are offered from October to December and generally meet weekly for two or three hours and for two to five consecutive weeks. Personal and professional development classes are available in the fields of computer programs, photography, organization and art.
Computer courses feature classes for beginners and those with general knowledge. “Computer Basics” meets from 1 to 3 p.m. on five Saturdays: October 26, and November 2, 9, 16 and 30. There are no classes on Nov. 23 because of the Thanksgiving holiday. Intended for the computer novice, participants can learn about web browsers, search techniques, email, and Windows 7. “Excel I” meets from 6 to 9 p.m. on three Wednesdays: Oct. 23 and 30 and Nov. 6. Students can learn to create and format spreadsheets. "Excel II" builds upon the concepts of "Excel I" and is set for 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on three Mondays: Nov. 18 and 25 and Dec 2. The cost of each course is $125.
For personal learning, “Organizing Your Life” is a four-hour workshop that explores the physical and emotional sides of personal organization. The course is scheduled from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct, 15 and 22. The cost is $105.
Everything you wanted to know about photography but were afraid to shoot is compressed into a 10-hour course, “Digital Photography Basic,” set for 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on five Saturdays: Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, 9, 16, and 30. Participants can learn about subject poses, composition, technique, camera basics, and automatic and manual settings. The cost is $125. A companion course, “Windows Movie Maker,” is a one day, five-hour class from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7. Registrants can learn how to incorporate photos and apply audio to create slide shows. The cost is $95, and students are encouraged to pack a lunch for the 30-minute break.
Adult learners can tap into their creative side and get an early jump on Christmas gifts, with “Pysanky Egg Decorating,” from 6 to 8 p.m. on four Tuesdays: Oct. 22 and 29 and Nov. 5 and 12. Pysanky, which means “to write a story in wax” are Ukrainian Easter eggs, decorated with traditional Ukrainian folk designs using a wax-resist (batik) method. The cost is $105.
