“Penn State in Pittsburgh” and
“Thank You Donors”

Penn State New Kensington students and faculty had lead roles in two recent videos that tout Penn State’s connection to Pittsburgh and thank campus donors for their benevolence.

The first video, “Penn State in Pittsburgh,” is a collaborative effort of four of Penn State’s western Pennsylvania campuses: Beaver, Fayette, Greater Allegheny, and New Kensington. A majority of the movie’s “stars” came from the New Kensington campus. The second video, “Thank You Donors,” is a philanthropic tribute from New Kensington students to campus benefactors.

Penn State in Pittsburgh
“Penn State in Pittsburgh” is part of a marketing campaign by the four campuses which surround the city in an amphitheater-like fashion. The video has run as a commercial on numerous broadcast and cable TV channels and highlights bachelor’s degree programs that can be completed locally. New Kensington offers nine four-year degrees -- Administration of Justice, Psychology (B.A and B.S.); Business; Communications; Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology; Information Sciences and Technology; Nursing; and Organizational Leadership. In addition, students can begin most of Penn State’s 160 bachelor’s degrees at local campuses and finish their degree at another Penn State campus. The video also publicizes the new scholarship money that is available to first-year students and the application fee waiver during campus visits. Special admissions events are scheduled throughout the spring semester. To attend an event or to schedule an individual visit at New Kensington, call 724-334-LION or 1-888-968-PAWS. The video complements another “Penn State in Pittsburgh” program that provides opportunities for students from the western campuses to experience the best of what the city of Pittsburgh has to offer. The initiative brings together the four campuses for a series of events accentuating the city’s educational, cultural, athletic and shopping benefits. During the fall semester, students attended a Pirates game, visited the Andy Warhol Museum, skated at the Rink at PPG Place, and shopped downtown during the holiday season. The spring semester schedule looks to be just as entertaining as students will take in the Broadway play “Wicked” at the Benedum Center, and shop in the Strip District. Thank You Donors
In the “Thank You Donors” video, campus students talk about how scholarships have affected their college experience. Scholarships and other endowed funds are essential for the continued success of the campus, and donors annually provide more than $187,000 in scholarships for freshmen and upperclassmen. Chancellor Kevin Snider also depends on these resources to address the campus’ most pressing needs and to create “real world” opportunities for students, such as the Chancellor Fellowship program which allows students to collaborate with faculty on specific projects. These funds are applied to areas with the greatest need. To view the video, visit www.nk.psu.edu/thankyou .

“It’s Your Time”
The new videos complement a series of three-minute videos that give prospective students a chance to hear about Penn State New Kensington directly from students and young alumni. “It’s Your Time” features five vignettes that extoll the advantages of enrolling at the New Kensington campus. Students and alumni talk about career opportunities, education paths, classes and student life at the campus. Even the iconic Nittany Lion gets some screen time, hosting a tour of the campus.

In the first video, “Opportunities,” students talk about internships, research projects and study-abroad programs that help campus students with career decisions. The “Choose Your Path,” video highlights the advantages of earning a four-year degree at the New Kensington campus or taking lower-level courses at the campus and completing bachelor’s degree work at the University Park campus. “Classes” points out that the small class sizes allow hands-on learning and one-on-one relationships with professors. “Lion Tour” provides an up-close view of the campus by the Nittany Lion. Since the aphonic mascot receives top-billing in the movie, it is, naturally, a “silent” film. However, the background music is as entertaining as the Lion. The last video, “Student Life,” features the extra-curricular activities that are available to campus students. Activities include intercollegiate athletics, clubs and organizations, and fitness facilities.
