Penn State New Kensington's fall sports teams -- men's soccer, women's volleyball and men's and women's golf -- open their conference seasons in September, and the overall outlook is promising.
Soccer, under the direction of first-year head coach Jordan Valentine, is going for its fourth consecutive playoff berth. The team will be led by sophomore center back Casey Cavanaugh, an all-conference selection a year ago, and senior forward Ashu Pandey, the team’s leading scorer last year with eight goals. The New Kensington Lions open Penn State University Athletic Conference play on the road at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, at Penn State Mont Alto.
Volleyball, with a blend of newcomers and veterans, is looking to continue its steady improvement under fourth-year head coach David McGeary. The Lady Lions, led by all-conference middle hitter Kensie Knapp, have the talent and personnel to earn a postseason bid for the first time since 2008. Freshman outside hitter Maria Daugherty (Plum) is expected to have an immediate impact as a starter. The squad opens its season at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18, at conference rival Penn State Beaver in Monaca.
Golf, under first-year head coach Tom Crombie, will field an inexperienced but skilled team with an eye on contending for team and individual honors. Top returnees are senior Chuck May and sophomore Liam Fitzgerald. Newcomers expected to earn berths in the top six are junior Neil Oplinger and freshmen Kyle Saylor and Grant Rukat. The team travels to Williamsport for an 11 a.m. match on Monday, Sept. 9, for the Penn College Invitational at White Deer Golf Course.
Campus intercollegiate teams compete in the PSUAC and the United States Collegiate Athletic Association. Post-season tournaments include PSUAC conference championships and USCAA national championships.
