Upperclassmen headed to University Park and
other Penn State campuses to finish bachelor’s degree
Penn State New Kensington students planning to complete their undergraduate studies at another campus will receive a farewell reception at noon on Monday, April 28, in the campus Art Gallery. The “Sophomore Send Off" brings together students, faculty and staff for a light lunch in an informal setting.
“This event gives faculty and staff the opportunity to wish continued success to Penn State New Kensington students who are planning to transition to another Penn State campus in the fall of 2014,” said Lauren Gigler, graduate assistant in the Student Activities office.
The reception complements Link UP, a program that provides an opportunity for first-year students to learn about Penn State resources. A year ago, Corey Bobak and Chelsea Leake, then freshmen, were able to learn about the change-of-campus process through Link UP. Bobak, a business major from Greensburg, and Leake, who is president of the campus’ Student Government Association and a risk management major from Saxonburg, will enter the Smeal College of Business at the University Park campus.
“When a Smeal professor came in and gave a small lecture to the group, I realized that I wanted to be at University Park,” said Bobak of his Link-UP experience. “It was also nice to hear from Smeal students who talked about internships and how one just got back from an interview with the New York Yankees.”
After the reception, Bobak and Leake will have one last chance to meet with fellow students and professors on May 2, at the Academic and Student Achievement ceremony. The annual event recognizes accomplishments of the campus community. Both will be honored at the event.
Bobak will earn the Community Service award, which recognizes the student who has shown commitment to a service project or organization. Bobak was part of a student-contingent that made a trip to Washington, D.C, during spring break to help the homeless.
Leake was named to the Who’s Who Among Students In American Junior Colleges and American Universities, which is reserved for outstanding campus leaders for their scholastic and community accomplishments. She was a member of the campus business team that competed in the Smeal Case Competition at University Park. In addition, Leake received the Student Government Association award for exemplary leadership.
